The winter months bring festive gatherings but also unique risks to your home, like freezing pipes and icy sidewalks. Taking a few steps now can help keep your home safe and prevent costly insurance claims. Here’s what to consider:

  • Pipe Insulation: Prevent freezing by insulating pipes and keeping your thermostat steady.
  • Roof & Gutter Checks: Clear any blockages to prevent ice dams and potential leaks.

Why accurate appraisals matter for your valuable jewelry

Did you know that outdated jewelry appraisals could leave you underinsured?  Gold and other precious metals have recently hit an all time highs.

Veterans Day – Honoring Those Who Served

Veterans Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by those who’ve served in the military. Let’s think of meaningful ways your business can honor veterans.  From offering discounts to hosting special events, to just saying thank you.

Supporting our veterans isn’t just a great way to give back – it’s a way to show your community that your business cares.

Let’s work together to create a safe and welcoming environment for all those who have served.

Be Aware of Sprinkler Systems While Working

Recently, we had a contractor’s work inadvertently damaged a sprinkler system, leading to extensive property damage and costly repairs. This incident underscores the critical need for vigilance when working around sprinkler systems.

To avoid similar issues, contractors should ensure proper training, mark the locations of these systems, and take precautions such as protective coverings during installations and locating hidden pipes behind walls before drilling or cutting into the wall.

Attention to these details helps safeguard both the property and project timelines. For comprehensive prevention tips, refer to Huff Insurance’s full guide on avoiding sprinkler damage.

Flood Insurance After Hurricane Helene

When people hear about hurricanes, their minds often go straight to beachfront properties and coastal communities. It’s easy to imagine surging waves crashing against shorelines and wind-swept sands when thinking about flood risk.

However, Hurricane Helene threw a wrench in those expectations by causing unprecedented flooding in areas far from the coast. This storm served as a stark reminder that when it comes to flooding, nowhere is truly “safe.”  Meaning every homeowner and business owner should think about getting flood insurance.

Flood Insurance After Hurricane Helene

Consequences of Using a Detached Structure at Your Home for Business Purposes

Did you know using a detached structure, like a garage or shed, for business purposes could leave you exposed? Under many homeowners policies, coverage can be limited or lost entirely if the structure is used for business activities, putting you at risk for losses or liabilities.

To avoid surprises, it might be time to review your policy or consider additional coverage options.

Fire Safety – The Escape Plan

October is Fire Safety Month, making it the perfect time to review your home’s fire escape plan. Having a well-thought-out plan and practicing it regularly can make all the difference in an emergency. Make sure everyone knows the best escape routes, has access to safety ladders, and understands their roles. Remember to test your smoke alarms and designate a family meeting spot outside. Taking these precautions ensures you’re prepared if a fire occurs.

Gun Safety in the Home

When it comes to owning a firearm, safety should always be the top priority. Implementing proper gun safety measures, such as secure storage, safe handling, and family education, helps prevent accidents and ensures your household is protected. Whether you’re a new or seasoned gun owner, it’s essential to keep firearms locked and stored away from unauthorized users. Promoting responsible gun ownership not only safeguards your family but also sets a positive example for others.

Hi ,

As we witness the aftermath of Hurricane Helene and prepare for the impending threat of Milton, our thoughts are with everyone impacted by these storms. Such events are a stark reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the devastating impact flooding can have on both personal and business assets.

We now into the 4th quarter of 2024. Now is a great time to do a progress checkup for your business.

Are you on pace to meet your 2024 goals?

This is also a great time to start laying the foundation for your 2025 business planning, which may include looking into flood insurance options for your home and business.

Huff Insurance Happenings!

Corporate Transparency Act and Beneficial Ownership Filing Requirements

Effective this year, the Corporate Transparency Act requires small businesses and entities to file ownership information with the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a division of the US Treasury Department. The law was passed to combat fraud through shell companies.

Anyone who owns a small business that has incorporated or is an LLC, including home-based businesses and single rental properties, must file. While the National Small Business Association successfully sued to have the requirement declared as unconstitutional, you must proceed as if the requirement were in effect. Penalty for failure to file is up to $500 per day and possible jail time.

You can file a beneficial ownership report at FinCEN’s website. Additional guidance on the CTA can be found in FinCEN’s Small Entity Compliance Guide. Filing is free.

Entities predating 2024 have until January 1, 2025 to file. Those created in 2024 have 90 days after their creation date, and those created after January 1, 2025 have 30 days to file.

Effects of Minimum Payroll Increases for General Liability and Workers Comp Policies

Maryland’s recent minimum wage increases have impacted business insurance, particularly in workers’ compensation and general liability.

As payroll levels rise, businesses face higher insurance premiums. Industries like hospitality, construction, and retail are especially affected.

Strategies to manage costs include classifying employees correctly, improving safety programs, and exploring pay-as-you-go workers’ comp policies. Our blog below offers guidance to help businesses adjust and reduce financial strain.

Hi,

I hope the Summer is treating you well as we head into Fall.

I have some good news regarding the proposed ban on gas powered leaf blowers.  While I was at a Pasadena Business Association membership meeting on Sept 4th, the news broke that the bill to ban the gas powered leaf blowers was withdrawn by the council person who submitted it.

There was a lot of backlash from local small business, such as our landscaper clients, and the community, so they decided to not pursue it, for now.

This is an example on how getting involved with the legislative process can make a difference.

Now on to other business related topics:

Huff Insurance Happenings!

Business Liability Insurance – How Much Is Enough?

When it comes to liability insurance, the amount of coverage you need depends on your business’s potential risks. Real-life incidents, such as a train derailment or a fire in a restaurant, demonstrate how damages can far exceed a typical $1 million policy. Businesses may face substantial costs for damages, cleanup, legal fees, and business interruptions. Increasing liability coverage or adding an umbrella insurance policy can better protect your business’s future.

For more details, check out the full article here.

Seasonal and Part Time Employees – Do You Need To Provide Workers Comp?

I have been seeing workers comp audits come back in recently that have had increases, so I did a little digging.

There is a recent trend for business owners to not include the payroll for their seasonal or part time employees in their estimated workers comp payrolls.  When I have asked why, they simply stated that they thought that they did not have to include them since they were only seasonal or part time..

This is not the case for workers comp insurance.  They must be included in the payroll figures.  There is an exception if you have paid a staffing firm to provide the workers, AND they provide workers comp for their temp employees.

For more information and to read my full blog please click here.

Marketing Corner – The Power of Networking

One of the many marketing strategies we use at Huff Insurance to grow our business is in person networking.  In person networking is crucial to developing deep long term relationships with communities and other businesses.  These relationships can, and will, help you grow your business.

We are involved in several of the surrounding chambers of commerce’s, the Pasadena Business Association and Jerry is involved with a group called the Maryland Business Builders.

The Maryland Business Builders (MBB) is a small group of local business people who meet on a weekly basis (Thursday Mornings at 8am for 1 hour) to discuss business and pass referrals to each other.  It is not a high pressure group like some of the others that you may have heard of.

The MBB is holding an open visitor’s day for their September 19th meeting.  To get the details of the visitors day or to let them know you are coming, you can visit their Facebook page here MBB Facebook Page

Are you ready for Fall?

Schools are back in full swing now,  and the weather is looking like it is finally ready to cool off.

Did you know that this time of year sees the most accidents involving deer?  That’s right, the deer are very active this time of year and it is when we see most of our deer collision claims in the agency.  Check out the section below.

Fall is also a great time to go through your home maintenance list to get things repaired and serviced.  Things to get serviced would be: HVAC, Chimney, Gutters, Water Systems, etc.   If you need a referral to any of the services above, please let me know.  We work with, and insure, several reputable contractors in these areas of expertise.

Deer Collisions: How to Stay Safe on the Road

As I mentioned above, the deer are very active this time of year.  It is the beginning of their mating season, and also the beginning hunting season.

In my blog, I go over what to do when a deer collision is unavoidable.

First things first: don’t panic. If you see a deer in your path and a collision is inevitable, it’s critical to handle the situation correctly to minimize harm. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Stay Calm and Focused: Panic can lead to bad decisions. Keep your wits about you.
  2. Hold on to the Steering Wheel: Maintain control of your vehicle.
  3. Apply the Brakes: Slow down as much as possible.
  4. Aim Straight Ahead: Do not swerve; aim straight at the deer.

The blog goes over the consequences of swerving to miss a deer as well as some preventative tips to take.  You can read the full blog Here.

Fall Home Maintenance Tips

As fall arrives, it’s important to prepare your home for the colder months. Essential tasks include cleaning gutters, sealing windows and doors, inspecting the roof and chimney, and servicing your heating system. Protect outdoor furniture, prepare your lawn and garden, and ensure proper insulation and ventilation. Don’t forget to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to keep your home safe. These steps can help prevent costly repairs and ensure a warm, energy-efficient winter.

Click here to read the full article.

Importance of Disclosing All Drivers to Your Auto Insurance Carrier

Disclosing all drivers on your auto insurance policy is crucial for accurate coverage. Omitting information, like a teen driver or occasional users, can lead to claims denial, policy cancellation, retroactive premium adjustments, and in some cases, criminal legal charges can be filed.  We have heard of insurance carriers perusing fraud claims.  In Maryland, the threshold for a crime to be considered a felony is only $300.

Insurance companies assess risk based on the details provided by you on the application.  And incomplete information can leave you underinsured or facing legal penalties. To avoid complications, regularly update your policy with driver and vehicle usage changes.
