Holiday Season tips from Huff Insurance:

By Jerry Nicklow, Operations Manager

The holiday season has arrived and many of us will officially start our holiday shopping on the infamous “BLACK FRIDAY.”   While shopping during this holiday season, there are some safety and security issues to keep in mind.  One of the most obvious is to keep your valuables secure by locking your vehicle and keeping items out of plain sight within your vehicle.  This can be accomplished by storing the items in a trunk of a vehicle.  Or, if you are like Nancy and I and have too many items to fit in the trunk, then carry a blanket to cover the items while they are in the back seat.  If someone is cruising the parking lot and sees a new 32” LCD television in plain sight, then they may be more tempted to break into the car than if they see a Winnie the Pooh blanket covering who knows what.

Also, be aware of your surroundings when standing outside in the middle of the night waiting for those store doors to open.  Keep your purses, wallets, bags, etc. secure to prevent a grab and run.  And be careful as you are running to get that big sale item so you do not run over anyone (like me, because I will be there too) or be run over yourself.  Our safety is more important than saving a few dollars on a TV or video game.

Something else to keep in mind is that if you are buying jewelry for your significant other (like Nancy has been hinting to me every time she sees a jewelry ad), the time to add it to your homeowner’s policy is the when you buy it, not when he or she opens it and says how wonderful and thoughtful you are for getting it for them.  A lot can happen in the two or three weeks while it is wrapped and sitting waiting to be opened, and you do not want it to disappear and realize then that you should have called your insurance agent to add it.

These are just a few quick tips for the holiday season.  I enjoy being out in the chaos and mayhem on “Black Friday” as much as anyone, but as always, the most important thing to remember is to enjoy the day and use your common sense to keep you and your newly acquired valuables safe and secure.

From our family here at Huff Insurance to yours, we wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and a Joyous Holiday Season!
